The Gingival Index (GI) of Löe and Silness (1963) assesses gingival inflammation using a 4-point scale: 0 = normal gingiva; 1 = mild inflammation (slight colour change, slight oedema, no bleeding on probing); 2 = moderate inflammation (redness, oedema, bleeding on probing); 3 = severe inflammation (marked redness and oedema, spontaneous bleeding, ulceration).
