Which of the following correctly describes the role of casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) in caries prevention?

Reveal the answer and explanation

Correct answer: BIt provides a reservoir of bioavailable calcium and phosphate ions at the tooth surface, promoting remineralisation

CPP-ACP (marketed as Recaldent, MI Paste) stabilises calcium and phosphate in a bioavailable amorphous form that can be delivered to the tooth surface. The casein phosphopeptide fraction binds to dental plaque, pellicle, and soft tissue, localising the ACP at the tooth surface. In an acidic environment (during caries attack), the ACP releases calcium and phosphate ions, promoting remineralisation and opposing demineralisation. When combined with fluoride (CPP-ACPF, MI Paste Plus), synergistic remineralisation occurs through fluorapatite formation.
