The greater palatine nerve (a branch of the maxillary nerve V2 via the pterygopalatine ganglion) provides sensory innervation to the palatal mucosa and gingiva of the premolars and molars, as well as the posterior hard palate. The nasopalatine nerve supplies the anterior palatal mucosa (incisive papilla region) and palatal gingiva of the incisors. The lesser palatine nerve supplies the soft palate. A greater palatine nerve block is performed by injecting at the greater palatine foramen, located at the junction of the alveolar process and horizontal plate of the palatine bone.
