Leukoedema is a common benign mucosal variation that presents as a diffuse, whitish-grey, filmy or milky appearance of the buccal mucosa, often bilateral. The key diagnostic feature is that it disappears when the mucosa is stretched (unlike leukoplakia, lichen planus, or candidiasis which remain visible). Histologically, it shows intracellular oedema of the spinous layer cells. It is more common in individuals with darker skin pigmentation and requires no treatment.
