Erythema multiforme (EM) is an acute, self-limiting immune-mediated condition characterised by target (iris/bull's eye) lesions on the skin (concentric rings of colour change) and/or erosive, crusted, haemorrhagic oral lesions (particularly the lips). EM minor primarily affects skin; EM major affects skin and mucous membranes. The most common trigger is herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection. Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis are severe forms. Oral involvement causes painful erosions with haemorrhagic crusting of the lips.
