Articaine is available in dental cartridges at 4% concentration (40 mg/mL) with either 1:100,000 or 1:200,000 epinephrine. It is the only routinely used dental local anaesthetic available at 4% concentration (lidocaine is 2%, mepivacaine is 2% or 3%, bupivacaine is 0.5%, prilocaine is 4%). Each 1.7 mL cartridge contains 68 mg of articaine. The higher concentration contributes to its superior bone penetration but also raises concentration-dependent neurotoxicity concerns for IAN blocks.
