The posterolateral hard palate is the most common intraoral site for minor salivary gland tumours. Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign minor salivary gland tumour at this site. Importantly, approximately 50% of minor salivary gland tumours in the palate are malignant (adenoid cystic carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma are the most common malignant types). Therefore, all palatal swellings should be biopsied — their malignancy rate is much higher than for parotid tumours (~15-25% malignant).
