Lactobacillus species are acidogenic and aciduric organisms that thrive in low-pH environments. While they are not primary initiators of enamel caries (S. mutans is the primary initiator), they are strongly associated with caries progression in dentin and with the advancement of established cavitated lesions. They colonise deep fissures, carious cavities, and areas of stagnation. Salivary Lactobacillus counts are used as indicators of caries activity and dietary sugar intake.
