Candida albicans is a dimorphic fungus that exists as yeast (blastospore) form in its commensal state and can transform to pseudohyphal and true hyphal forms during tissue invasion. It is a normal commensal of the oral cavity in approximately 40-60% of healthy individuals. Pathogenicity is associated with the transition from yeast to hyphal form. Predisposing factors for oral candidiasis include immunosuppression, xerostomia, antibiotic therapy, denture wearing, and diabetes.
