Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) Type I (hypoplastic) is characterised by reduced enamel thickness (insufficient enamel matrix production by ameloblasts) but normal mineralisation of the enamel that is present. Clinically, the enamel is thin with pits, grooves, or generalised thinning; teeth may appear small with open contacts. Radiographically, the thin enamel shows normal radiodensity (contrast with normal dentin). AI Type II (hypomaturation) has soft enamel of normal thickness; AI Type III (hypocalcified) has weak, chalky enamel of normal thickness.
