Gingivectomy is the excision of the pocket wall (soft tissue) using a gingivectomy knife (Kirkland, Orban), electrosurgery, or laser to eliminate suprabony pockets. It is indicated for suprabony pockets with adequate attached gingiva, gingival enlargement (drug-induced, hereditary), and crown lengthening in selected cases. It is NOT indicated for infrabony defects (which require flap surgery for osseous access) or when there is inadequate attached gingiva.
