Correct answer: D — Coxsackievirus group A
Herpangina is caused by Coxsackievirus group A (most commonly types A1-6, 8, 10, 22). It presents in children with sudden onset fever, sore throat, dysphagia, and multiple small vesicles/ulcers confined to the soft palate, tonsillar pillars, and pharynx (posterior oropharynx). Unlike primary herpetic gingivostomatitis (which affects the anterior oral cavity and gingiva), herpangina lesions are posteriorly located. It is self-limiting (7-10 days) with supportive treatment.
