The tensor veli palatini is innervated by the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve (V3) via the medial pterygoid nerve. It is the ONLY muscle of the soft palate not innervated by the pharyngeal plexus (CN X via CN XI). All other palatal muscles (levator veli palatini, musculus uvulae, palatoglossus, palatopharyngeus) are innervated by the pharyngeal plexus (CN X).
