Mamelons are three small rounded protuberances on the incisal edge of newly erupted permanent incisors. They represent the developmental lobes of the tooth (three labial lobes separated by developmental grooves). They are most visible on mandibular and maxillary central incisors. Mamelons are normally worn away by attrition within 1-2 years of eruption as the teeth come into functional occlusion. Persistence of mamelons in adults suggests anterior open bite (no functional contact).
