The SLOB rule (Same Lingual Opposite Buccal) states that when the X-ray tube is shifted in one direction an object on the lingual/palatal side appears to move in the SAME direction as the tube shift while a buccal object moves in the OPPOSITE direction. If the tube shifts mesially and the object also moves mesially (same direction) the object is LINGUAL/PALATAL. This technique is essential for localising impacted canines supernumerary teeth and foreign bodies in three dimensions using two-dimensional periapical radiographs.
