Odontoblasts are specialised cells lining the pulp-dentin border that produce dentin matrix (predentin) throughout the life of the tooth. Their cell bodies remain in the pulp with cytoplasmic processes (odontoblastic processes) extending into the dentinal tubules. Primary odontoblasts produce primary and secondary dentin; if destroyed, pulp stem cells may differentiate into odontoblast-like cells that produce reparative (tertiary) dentin.
