The masseter is the strongest muscle of mastication and the most powerful elevator of the mandible. It consists of superficial and deep heads originating from the zygomatic arch and inserting on the lateral surface of the mandibular ramus and angle. The temporalis and medial pterygoid also act as elevators but produce less force. The masseter generates the highest bite force, particularly in the molar region. All three elevators are innervated by the mandibular division (V3) of the trigeminal nerve.
