The vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) is the distance between two facial landmarks (typically a point on the nose and a point on the chin) when the maxillary and mandibular teeth are in maximum intercuspation. The rest vertical dimension (RVD) is this measurement when the mandible is in the physiological rest position. The difference (RVD - VDO) is the freeway space (normally 2-4 mm). Loss of VDO (from worn/missing teeth) leads to angular cheilitis, overclosure, and a collapsed facial profile.
