Secondary (recurrent) caries is caries that develops at the margins of existing restorations due to microleakage, marginal gaps, or breakdown of the tooth-restoration interface allowing bacterial penetration. It is one of the most common reasons for restoration replacement. Residual caries is caries intentionally or unintentionally left beneath a restoration. Primary caries occurs on a previously unrestored surface.
