The lateral and ventral tongue (and adjacent floor of the mouth) is the most common site for intraoral squamous cell carcinoma. These sites are bathed in pooled saliva that may concentrate carcinogens (tobacco, alcohol metabolites), have thin non-keratinised epithelium, and lack the protective keratinised barrier of the hard palate or attached gingiva. The lateral tongue alone accounts for approximately 40% of intraoral SCC cases.
