Quantitative Light-induced Fluorescence (QLF) uses blue-violet light (405 nm) to illuminate teeth. Sound enamel fluoresces green; demineralised enamel shows reduced fluorescence (dark spots). QLF can detect and quantify early enamel demineralisation that is not visible to the naked eye, making it useful for monitoring remineralisation therapies. DIAGNOdent uses red laser fluorescence (655 nm) to detect porphyrins in carious tooth structure but has different operating principles from QLF.
