The freeway space (interocclusal rest space) is the distance between the maxillary and mandibular occlusal surfaces when the mandible is in the physiological rest position. It is normally 2-4 mm (average 3 mm). The occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) is determined by subtracting the freeway space from the rest vertical dimension (RVD): OVD = RVD - freeway space. Excessive OVD (reduced freeway space) causes muscle fatigue, pain, and clicking. Insufficient OVD causes overclosure and angular cheilitis.
