Eugenol (4-allyl-2-methoxyphenol) is a free radical scavenger that inhibits the polymerisation of resin-based materials (composites, resin cements, resin-modified GICs). When ZOE is used as a temporary restoration or base before a composite or resin-bonded restoration, residual eugenol contaminating the dentin surface reduces bond strength and degree of conversion. Non-eugenol temporary cements (e.g., Temp-Bond NE, TempoCem NE) should be used instead.
