Resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) is the preferred liner/base under composite restorations near the pulp. It bonds to dentin, releases fluoride, provides thermal insulation, and is compatible with composite resin bonding systems. Calcium hydroxide has traditionally been used but has poor mechanical properties and dissolves under restorations over time. ZOE cement inhibits composite polymerisation and must not be used under composite. RMGIC provides superior mechanical properties and seal.
