Correct answer: DTo provide antimicrobial activity and create an alkaline environment hostile to bacteria

Calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)₂] is the most widely used intracanal medicament. Its high pH (approximately 12.5) creates an alkaline environment that destroys bacterial cell membranes and inactivates endotoxins (LPS). It has antimicrobial properties, induces hard tissue barrier formation (apexification), and controls inflammatory root resorption. It requires at least 7 days to achieve effective antimicrobial activity throughout the canal system.
