Correct answer: ATo direct occlusal forces along the long axis of the abutment tooth

The rest (and rest seat preparation) has the primary function of directing occlusal forces along the long axis of the abutment tooth, thereby transmitting forces favourably through the periodontium. A positive rest seat prevents the RPD from settling and impinging on soft tissue. Rest seats should be at least 1.5 mm deep (rounded concavity) with a floor that slopes towards the centre of the tooth.
