Linear gingival erythema (LGE) is a distinct, fiery red band along the free gingival margin that does not respond to conventional plaque control or scaling. It is strongly associated with HIV/AIDS and may be caused by Candida species. It was formerly called 'HIV-associated gingivitis.' Other HIV-associated periodontal conditions include necrotising ulcerative periodontitis (NUP) and necrotising stomatitis.
