Correct answer: CEctomesenchymal cells of the dental papilla

Odontoblasts differentiate from ectomesenchymal cells at the periphery of the dental papilla, adjacent to the inner enamel epithelium (IEE). Reciprocal signalling between IEE and dental papilla induces this differentiation. IEE cells become ameloblasts. Dental follicle cells give rise to periodontium.
