The ansa cervicalis (C1-C3) is a loop of nerves embedded in the anterior wall of the carotid sheath. It supplies the infrahyoid strap muscles: sternohyoid / sternothyroid / and omohyoid (inferior belly). The thyrohyoid is supplied by C1 fibres travelling with the hypoglossal nerve. The strap muscles depress the hyoid and larynx.
