VC = TV + IRV + ERV (the maximum volume that can be exhaled after a maximal inspiration). Normal VC in a 70 kg male is approximately 4.5 L. VC does NOT include RV (which cannot be exhaled). VC is reduced in: restrictive lung disease / neuromuscular weakness / obesity / pregnancy / and pain limiting deep breathing.
