The azygos vein drains into the posterior aspect of the SVC just above the pericardial reflection (approximately at T4 level). It drains: the posterior thoracic wall / mediastinum / and (via the hemiazygos and accessory hemiazygos systems) the left posterior thoracic wall. It provides an important collateral pathway between the SVC and IVC territories.
