The epiglottis is a leaf-shaped elastic cartilage attached inferiorly to the inner surface of the thyroid cartilage by the thyroepiglottic ligament. Superiorly it is attached to the hyoid bone by the hyoepiglottic ligament. The vallecula (the space between the tongue base and epiglottis) is the target for the Macintosh laryngoscope blade tip.
