Their afferents travel through cranial nerves IX and X to the nucleus tractus solitarius. This increases cardiac vagal activity and inhibits sympathetic outflow, causing bradycardia, reduced cardiac contractility and vasodilation through withdrawal of sympathetic vasoconstrictor tone.
