This is a normal anion gap (hyperchloraemic) metabolic acidosis. The anion gap is 12 mmol/L (normal 8-12). Normal AG metabolic acidosis is characterised by: low pH, low HCO3⁻, elevated chloride (hyperchloraemic), and normal anion gap. Causes include: renal tubular acidosis, diarrhoea, pancreatic fistula, ureterosigmoidostomy, and excessive 0.9% saline administration (dilutional acidosis). This contrasts with high AG acidosis (MUDPILES: methanol, uraemia, DKA, propylene glycol, isoniazid/iron, lactic acidosis, ethylene glycol, salicylates).
