Correct answer: ECentral incisors retroclined; lateral incisors normal or proclined

Explanation lettering: D = shown as A · C = shown as B · E = shown as C · B = shown as D · A = shown as E

Class II division 2 is characterised by retroclination (palatal inclination) of the maxillary central incisors, usually associated with a deep overbite. The maxillary lateral incisors may be normally inclined or proclined and can overlap the retroclined central incisors; therefore A is the best definition. B describes the incisor pattern of Class II division 1, in which the upper incisors are proclined and the overjet is commonly increased. C is too absolute: although all four upper incisors can be retroclined in some presentations, this is not the defining classification pattern. D concerns the wrong arch, and E describes an anterior crossbite rather than Class II division 2. The discriminating feature is the inclination of the upper central incisors, not simply the presence of a deep bite.
