Primary maxillary incisors are especially commonly injured, and the developing permanent incisor lies close to the roots of its primary predecessor. Trauma—particularly intrusion—or infection can therefore disturb ameloblast function and produce hypoplasia or discolouration in the permanent incisor. The mandibular first molar and maxillary second molar do not have primary incisors as predecessors. A maxillary canine and mandibular second premolar may develop enamel defects after pathology in their own primary predecessors, but they are not the characteristic or most susceptible successor in the primary-incisor trauma scenario.
