A 55 year old man with long standing alcohol use disorder presents with sudden onset severe epigastric pain radiating to the back and vomiting. Serum lipase is 900 U/L (normal less than 60 U/L), ALT is mildly elevated and ultrasound shows no gallstones. He is tachycardic but haemodynamically stable. What is the most appropriate initial management?
