How does inhaled Ventavis act on the pulmonary blood vessels?

Inhaled Ventavis directly dilates the pulmonary arterial bed, significantly improving pulmonary artery pressure, pulmonary vascular resistance, cardiac output and mixed venous oxygen saturation; its pulmonary vasodilatory effect levels off within one to two hours, and the acute response does not always correlate with long-term benefit.
