How can long-term phenytoin treatment affect vitamin D and bone health in people with epilepsy?

In people with epilepsy receiving long-term treatment, phenytoin is thought to increase vitamin D3 metabolism, potentially causing vitamin D deficiency and increasing the risk of osteomalacia, bone fractures, osteoporosis, hypocalcaemia and hypophosphataemia.
