RCoA Lifelong Learning Platform: Connect FRCA Revision to a PDP Without Filling It with Question Counts

A useful FRCA-related personal development plan names the reasoning or performance that needs to improve, not just the number of questions to complete. Put the learning need first, choose an activity that addresses it and decide how progress will be reviewed. The RCoA Lifelong Learning Platform records development; it does not make a revision target meaningful by storing it.

Question counts can still help organise time. They are poor substitutes for an explanation of why the work matters and what you will be able to do differently afterwards.

Start with a need that a supervisor can recognise

Compare two proposed objectives. The first is "finish the physiology bank before the exam". The second is "explain which assumptions make my interpretation of a monitoring trend valid, and identify what information would make me reconsider it".

The first describes a workload. The second describes a learning need that can be explored through questions, discussion and appropriate supervised practice. Neither guarantees an examination result, but the second gives a supervisor something useful to assess and challenge.

The RCoA's LLP guidance, checked on 13 September 2026, describes curriculum-linked training, logbook and CPD functionality. Access depends on the relevant College arrangements. This article's worksheet is a proposed way to prepare for a development discussion, not a reproduction of required LLP fields or a claim that every account has the same configuration.

An original monitoring example

Consider a fictional trainee who usually recognises a familiar monitoring trace in revision questions. When the case adds a changing clinical context, they struggle to separate three possibilities: a genuine physiological change, a problem with how the measurement was obtained, or insufficient information to choose between them.

The aim is not to memorise another trace label. It is to explain what the display measures, which assumptions connect it to the patient's state and what needs checking before accepting an interpretation. No patient management instruction is being given here; the example concerns how to define a learning task.

A staged plan could involve reviewing the relevant mechanism, explaining an original example aloud and discussing a suitable case with a trainer. Any equipment demonstration or clinical application requires the appropriate environment and supervision. Reading a correct explanation does not establish that the trainee can perform the necessary checks in practice.

Draft a PDP that distinguishes activity from outcome

Use the following worksheet before the supervisory meeting. Its example is deliberately incomplete where no real event has occurred.

ElementA useful draftWhat not to substitute
Learning needI confuse a measurement limitation with a physiological explanation in changed casesA broad instruction to revise harder
Evidence for the needMy own question review and a discussion of the reasoningA claim that a dashboard measures clinical competence
PreparationReview the mechanism and explain two original variationsRewatching an entire course without identifying the gap
Supervised opportunityAgree an appropriate discussion or demonstration with a trainerAn invented encounter written as completed work
Intended changeState the assumptions and describe what would challenge the interpretationA guaranteed improvement in patient outcomes
Review evidenceFeedback and a fresh explanation after the planned activityQuestion count alone

The intended change should remain proportionate. A single learning activity may clarify one mechanism; it need not prove independent management of every related clinical situation. Discuss what level of evidence is appropriate for the trainee's stage and the specific curriculum requirement.

Give each resource one job

Official College material establishes the examination or training context. A reference or teaching session can rebuild the underlying science. Questions test whether that understanding survives changes in presentation. A trainer can observe the relevant activity and explore whether the explanation fits clinical practice.

This article is published by iatroX and includes its learning tools, but it does not compare a commercial revision subscription with the LLP as though one could replace the other. In iatroX's September 2026 product description, the Tutor asks follow-up questions around an attempted item. That is useful for the fictional trainee's assumption-checking problem: the learner should explain why the interpretation follows, not simply request the answer again.

The same product description includes a study planner that uses the exam date and study-time input. A sensible use is to reserve time for a defined gap and later revisit it. The plan should not crowd out an agreed clinical learning opportunity because the software recommends another question session.

No dedicated FRCA simulation track is assumed in this article. Use only the content actually available for the relevant task, and retain supervised preparation for practical and clinical competencies.

Review what changed, including what did not

At follow-up, compare the initial explanation with the new one. Can the trainee now distinguish what was measured from what was inferred? Can they name a missing piece of information? Did a supervisor identify a different problem? These questions make the review concrete without inventing a scoring scale.

The record may show partial progress. For example, the mechanism is clearer in a written explanation but becomes confused when the trainee speaks under pressure. That suggests another opportunity to practise explanation, not an automatic need to repeat all the original reading.

A learning goal may also need to change because the planned case or trainer was unavailable. Record the real position and agree a new route. A future intention should not become a past achievement through enthusiastic editing.

Keep the learner's own reasoning in the final account. AI-assisted prompts or wording must not replace the experience, manufacture feedback or claim that something improved when it was not observed. Check current College and local guidance before using external tools with any training material.

Keep the learning record separate from approval

As described on the iatroX CPD page on 13 September 2026, learners review and personalise draft records and can export a PDF. That may help retain the study component of a development plan. It does not confer LLP approval, establish a workplace assessment or imply an automatic transfer into the College system.

The UK subscription published on that date is £99 paid upfront for the year, equivalent to £8.25 per month billed annually, or £29 monthly. Paid question banks, Tutor, study planning, simulations and CPD tools are included in the same plan. Ask-iatroX and free question access remain genuinely free; a separate paid record is not required merely to start learning.

Use an additional subscription when its learning activities address an identified need. Use the trainer and the official platform to agree, observe and record professional development. A stronger PDP connects those functions while keeping their evidential limits clear.

Frequently asked questions

Is completing a set number of FRCA questions a sufficient PDP objective?

It can be an activity target, but it should be connected to a specific learning need and a way of reviewing progress. A count alone does not explain what understanding or performance changed.

Does an iatroX CPD record automatically count as an LLP assessment?

No: a learning record and a formal assessment serve different purposes. Use the current RCoA requirements and the appropriate supervisor or assessor for the evidence being claimed.

Should a PDP be marked complete when all planned reading is finished?

Review whether the intended learning occurred rather than equating completed reading with the outcome. Where understanding or performance remains uncertain, record the remaining need and agree a next step.
