This audit is for candidates deciding whether a Primary FRCA revision course earns its place in the stack, and which component it actually serves. The most important thing to say first is a correction: "Primary FRCA Courses" is a category, not a single product. There is no one course with a fixed question count, access period or AI feature to verify. If you arrived expecting a review of one product with a "live question count", stop and reset. Primary FRCA revision courses are teaching products: lectures, worked examples, viva practice and, sometimes, marked mock sittings. Their strength is structure and explanation, and their principal limitation is that they are mostly passive delivery — you receive content, you do not, by default, retrieve it under test conditions. That is not a criticism of any individual course; it is the nature of the format. The audit below treats the category honestly and tells you what to bolt on.

Because this is a category, the usual current-state figures vary by provider and must be verified individually:
- Live question count: Not applicable in the Q-bank sense. Courses are not banks; some include a finite set of practice questions or a mock, but there is no single headline count. Verify per provider.
- Access period: Ranges from a fixed live event (a day or a weekend) to time-limited access to recordings. Verify per provider.
- AI / adaptive features: Generally none; delivery is human-led teaching. Verify per provider.
- Price: Varies widely, from the RCoA's own Primary FRCA Online Revision Course to commercial crammers. Verify the current fee and dates on each provider's page (for the RCoA course, on rcoa.ac.uk) before booking.
- Supported components: This is the useful figure — most courses address the MCQ knowledge base, the OSCE and the SOE, and the better ones cover all three. Verify which components a given course actually teaches.
The named reference point most candidates recognise is the RCoA's own Primary FRCA Online Revision Course; commercial and deanery crammers sit around it. Treat the RCoA offering as the calibration anchor and third-party courses as supplements.
Exam anchor
The Primary FRCA currently comprises a 90-SBA MCQ paper (3 hours, online, remote-invigilated) split 30 pharmacology / 30 physiology / 30 physics, clinical measurement, statistics and data interpretation; an OSCE; and an SOE. MTF was discontinued in September 2023. The RCoA defines these requirements; a course's syllabus is a third-party interpretation of them, and where the two differ, the RCoA wins. From July 2027 the format is scheduled to change to an Applied Knowledge Test plus a Clinical Anaesthetic Sciences Exam — if your diet is 2027 or later, verify against the RCoA 2027 changes hub, because a course built for the OSCE/SOE will need to have been rebuilt for the CASE.
Mapping modules to the blueprint
A good course covers the three MCQ thirds and the practical components in rough proportion to the blueprint. Audit any course against this by asking where its hours actually go:
- Well-served by most courses: pharmacology and physiology teaching, and viva technique — these are the traditional strengths of the crammer format.
- Often lightly covered: physics, clinical measurement and statistics — the third that candidates find least intuitive is frequently the thinnest part of a course, so check the timetable specifically for it.
- Sometimes over-taught: high-interest clinical topics that make for engaging lectures but carry modest blueprint weight.
If a course's timetable skews towards its lecturers' interests rather than the blueprint's weighting, that is a gap you will fill elsewhere.
Passive assets versus active assets
Separate what a course gives you from what it makes you do.

The passive column is where courses concentrate; the active column is where exams are won. A course that is all lectures and handouts, with no marked mock and no viva you actually perform, has left the harder half of the work to you.
Judging question quality (where a course has questions)
Where a course does include questions or a mock, judge them on fidelity, not testimonials: are the stems the length and style of a real SBA; are the distractors plausible; do they use images and data where the exam does; are they current against present guidance; and are the three blueprint thirds balanced? A handful of easy recall items bundled into a course is not equivalent to a timed, unseen bank.
The component gap
State plainly what a course cannot do for you no matter how good the teaching. It cannot generate the volume of unseen, timed practice that pacing and retention require — a weekend of teaching is not 2,000 timed items. It can rehearse viva technique, but the spoken SOE defence and OSCE stations still have to be performed repeatedly, ideally with a listener, between sessions. And the physics, equipment and graph-reading load usually needs its own drilling. In short, a course teaches; it does not, by itself, measure whether the teaching stuck.
Time-cost calculation
Estimate the trade honestly for three schedules. For a candidate with twelve-plus weeks, a course's ~20–40 hours of teaching is affordable if converted quickly to recall; for a candidate with four to twelve weeks, a course is worth it only for a named weak component, because every course hour is an hour not spent on unseen practice; for a candidate with under four weeks, a full course is usually the wrong purchase — the hours are better spent retrieving what you already half-know. The rule of thumb: for every hour of lecture, budget at least an equal hour of active retrieval, or the lecture decays before the exam.
Who benefits
A course earns its place for the weak-foundations candidate who needs concepts explained before volume helps; the retaker who needs a structured diagnosis and viva calibration; the IMG or candidate new to UK exam style who benefits from house-style teaching and SOE practice; and any candidate who needs structure and accountability to revise at all. It benefits least the disciplined, well-founded candidate short of time, for whom it can become expensive reassurance.
Worked example: a seven-day plan (busy trainee)
A trainee revising around clinical work uses a course for one defined job — SOE and physics teaching — and iatroX for adaptive transfer practice, without any claim to a proprietary algorithm.

Continuing to attend teaching after the concept has landed delays the timed, unseen practice that actually predicts readiness, so treat the course as a phase, not a companion for the whole run-in.
