MRCPsychmentor and PassMRCPsych Alternatives: Buy for Paper A or Paper B, Not Psychiatry in General

The right MRCPsych written resource depends on the paper and the kind of difficulty you need to resolve. A broad psychiatry library, a Paper A bank and a Paper B teaching programme are not interchangeable purchases. Start with the assessment and the learning task, then compare providers.

This article is published by iatroX and includes iatroX alongside MRCPsychmentor and PassMRCPsych. Product descriptions were checked on 19 September 2026. Clinical simulation is considered separately from written-paper preparation.

Check the paper before comparing the package

MRCPsychmentor and PassMRCPsych provide examination-focused preparation. Inspect the exact written-paper entitlement, explanatory material and access duration. Do not assume that a provider's broader catalogue is included in every purchase.

PassMRCPsych also describes SimFlow for CASC practice. That does not make its clinical simulation offer a substitute for Paper A or Paper B questions, nor does buying written preparation necessarily imply access to every clinical feature.

Use the Royal College of Psychiatrists' examination guidance to anchor the current assessment requirements. Independent resources can organise revision, but they should not determine which paper or task you are preparing for.

Name the difficulty precisely

A learner can struggle with unfamiliar terminology, the relationship between concepts, interpretation of research or the application of knowledge in a question. These problems may all appear as an incorrect answer, but they do not call for identical teaching.

For an original example, consider a fictional learner who remembers the definition of a research measure but interprets it incorrectly when the surrounding study changes. More repetition of the definition may not help. They need to explain what the measure does and does not permit them to conclude.

Another learner may simply have not covered the topic. A structured explanation and appropriate questions may be enough. It is unnecessary to turn every missing fact into an elaborate conversational exercise.

Compare rationales using an alternative answer

During a legitimate trial or sample, choose an item where an incorrect option seems plausible. Ask whether the explanation addresses that plausibility. Does it show the distinction, or merely state that the correct answer is correct?

A clear comparison between alternatives is especially valuable when the learner is applying an overbroad rule. It makes the limit of the rule visible. A long explanation that never addresses the mistaken assumption may still leave the learner vulnerable to the next similar item.

This is a proposed evaluation method. We have not scored the named providers against a standardised question set, and no claims of superior diagnostic or examination accuracy are made.

Keep written and clinical learning connected but distinct

Clinical experience can make a concept memorable, and a simulation can expose uncertainty. Neither automatically demonstrates readiness for a written paper. Conversely, selecting the right written answer does not establish that a candidate can conduct an effective clinical interview.

Use the connection selectively. A written error might lead to a short discussion of a concept. A difficult interview might identify a topic for revision. Do not create a plan in which every activity requires completing an unrelated component of the platform.

Look at the cost in study time

A new resource has an onboarding cost: learning the interface, understanding its topic organisation and deciding how to use its feedback. If your existing bank is effective, a replacement needs a clear benefit.

A supplementary resource should have a limited role, such as clarifying a difficult research concept or supplying unfamiliar practice in a defined area. Running complete parallel programmes can leave less time to review either properly.

Which option fits?

Choose a specialist written provider when its paper-specific explanations and structure meet your needs. Consider iatroX when targeted Tutor follow-up and a performance-informed plan address persistent errors. Use a clinical simulation product for clinical rehearsal, not as a reason to neglect the separate written task. The best purchase is the one that changes the learning work you can do, not the one with the broadest psychiatry label.

The iatroX purchase in context

iatroX's September 2026 MRCPsych Paper A or Paper B pathway connects practice with a Tutor that investigates the reasoning behind an attempted answer. That is worth testing when reading the rationale has not resolved a misconception; a clear written explanation may otherwise be enough.

The free-question sample offers up to twenty questions for the selected examination, subject to availability, without an account or card. Full MRCPsych Paper A or Paper B access and ongoing Tutor use are paid; the separate introductory Tutor session requires a free account.

The UK price published on 19 September 2026 is £99 paid upfront annually, equivalent to £8.25 a month billed annually, or £29 monthly. Paid question banks, Socratic Tutor, the study planner, simulations and CPD tools are included together, not sold as separate simulation or CPD add-ons.

Frequently asked questions

Does CASC simulation access replace Paper A or Paper B preparation?

No. Clinical interviewing and written assessment require different forms of practice.

Should I buy a package covering both papers?

Only when the timing and content make it useful. Check the exact entitlement and your planned preparation period.

Is a longer rationale always a better explanation?

No. It should address the learner's actual misunderstanding and distinguish the plausible alternatives.
