This workflow is for trainees using SPMM for MRCPsych Paper A who want its dense notes and lectures to become durable, testable knowledge rather than a well-highlighted PDF. It addresses the written knowledge paper only. SPMM's strength — comprehensive, high-yield teaching — is also its trap: notes and video invite passive review, which feels productive and transfers poorly. The principal limitation to design around is that consumption is not retrieval, so the whole method below is built to force recall and to measure it on questions you have never seen.

SPMM's Paper A offerings, per its course-packages page (vendor-reported, GBP): a Starter (HiYield) A package at £299 for six months, combining SmartRevise study materials with subject-based HiYield question banks and evidence-based explanations; a Paper A e-Crashclass at £199 for three months, around 20 hours of video across the basic-science subjects with conceptual coverage of both MCQs and EMIs and a printable PDF question bank; and a Booster (Mock) A package at £249, six reconstructed practice papers, sold only from about ten weeks before the College exam. The pages describe no proprietary AI or adaptive-difficulty engine. Verify all counts, prices and access periods on spmmcourse.com before buying. Usefully, SPMM's crash course explicitly addresses EMIs as well as MCQs — worth noting, since EMIs are a third of the paper and are under-rehearsed in some MCQ-only banks.
That EMI coverage is a real reason to include SPMM in a stack, but it also sets the task: notes and lectures that explain extended matching items still have to be converted into EMI questions you attempt under time, because reading an explanation of a matching set is not the same as working one against the clock. The method below performs that conversion for every part of SPMM's material, so its teaching becomes questions you answer rather than pages you have read and video you have watched.

MRCPsych Paper A is approximately 150 questions in three hours, roughly two-thirds single-best-answer MCQs and one-third EMIs, computer-based at Pearson VUE; confirm the current count on rcpsych.ac.uk. It tests the scientific and theoretical basis of psychiatry: behavioural science and sociocultural psychiatry, human development, basic neurosciences, clinical psychopharmacology, and classification and assessment. Treat the College's free sample questions as the gold standard for format, and SPMM's reconstructed mock papers as a strong realism aid rather than an official specification. The CASC is separate; iatroX is a knowledge and unseen-MCQ layer, not a CASC simulator.
The core method: turn SPMM's teaching into retrieval
Before each SPMM module, answer a short diagnostic set. Five or ten questions — from the HiYield bank or your unseen pool — before you open the SmartRevise notes or a crash-course lecture will expose what you already know and give you a reason to study. The gaps set your agenda; without them, dense notes become undifferentiated highlighting.
Study in bounded segments, then recall before checking. Take one lecture segment or one notes section, close it, and write a concise recall from memory — mechanisms, discriminating features, the management or classification rule — before you reopen the material to correct yourself. SPMM's notes are thorough enough to read passively for hours; the bounded-segment-plus-recall rule is what stops that.
Convert each learning objective into three prompts. One discrimination question, one management or classification rule, and one "why not the alternative?" prompt per objective. For psychopharmacology especially, the "why not" prompt — why this agent and not the plausible alternative — is where Paper A marks are won; check any medicines specifics against the SmPC/eMC rather than a paraphrased note.
Test within 24–48 hours and again after an interval. Do not re-watch the lecture as revision. Answer fresh questions on the material within a day or two and again after a spacing gap. For SPMM this is important because its mock papers are reconstructed from recalled exam questions: they are excellent calibration, but re-doing the same recalled items rehearses memory of those items, so keep first attempts protected and spaced.
Build a weekly mixed block. Once a week, mix topics so that SPMM's subject-by-subject order stops cueing answers. Knowledge that only surfaces in the lecture's sequence will not survive a mixed paper.
Exit the course on performance, not completion
Leave a SPMM module behind when your unseen, timed performance on its topics improves — not when you finish the notes or the 20 hours of video. Completion of SmartRevise is consumption; unseen accuracy is learning. Save the Booster mock papers for the final weeks, and read your progress from the second number.
A seven-day plan for a busy trainee
One job each: SPMM for teaching and realistic mocks, iatroX for unseen transfer measurement — no proprietary-algorithm claim on either side, and no item answered twice across them.
- Monday: diagnostic set on the week's subject; two bounded SmartRevise/crash-course segments with recall after each.
- Tuesday: convert the module's objectives into discrimination questions, rules and "why not" prompts; attempt a short HiYield block.
- Wednesday: fresh-question test on the topic (unseen where possible), error-coded review.
- Thursday: second subject segment, same routine; add EMI-style practice for a pharmacology or neuroscience topic.
- Friday: an unseen, mixed, timed iatroX block across both subjects — the transfer test.
- Saturday: spaced re-test of the week's misses; a few official RCPsych samples for calibration; a Booster mock only in the final weeks.
- Sunday: update the blueprint matrix and set next week's agenda from the gaps.
Keeping SPMM as the teacher and iatroX as the grader on unseen items is the two-Q-bank rule applied to a course.
Decision checklist: continue, supplement, switch or stop
- Continue with SPMM if unseen accuracy on its taught topics is rising.
- Supplement with more question volume if the notes teach well but leave too few fresh items to test transfer — the blueprint-coverage matrix will show where.
- Switch primary mode to mixed timed papers once domain floors are met and pacing needs work.
- Stop new consumption when coverage is even, misses are slips and the unseen score has plateaued; move to spaced review and mocks.
Decide on measured gaps, not on how many pages of notes remain.
Three mistakes this workflow is designed to stop
Highlighting the HiYield notes instead of recalling from them. SPMM's notes are dense and genuinely high-yield, which is exactly what makes them a trap: it is easy to spend hours highlighting and re-reading, mistaking familiarity for knowledge. Close the notes and write the recall first; the highlighter should only ever confirm what you could already retrieve, never stand in for it. If you cannot reproduce the discriminating feature without looking, you have not learned it yet.
Re-doing the reconstructed mock papers until you remember them. The Booster papers are built from recalled exam questions, which makes them superb calibration and poor repeat practice — a second attempt largely measures your memory of that paper, not your reasoning. Sit each mock once, timed, late in your preparation, and review the misses against the notes rather than re-running the whole paper for a comfortable but hollow score.
Treating completion of SmartRevise as readiness. Finishing the twenty hours of crash-course video or reading every notes section measures consumption, not retrieval under time. The outcome that matters is unseen, timed accuracy across the blueprint, so let that — and not how much of the course remains — decide when a topic is genuinely done and when your effort should move elsewhere.

Is SPMM enough for MRCPsych Paper A on its own? SPMM's notes, crash course and mock papers make it a strong teaching and calibration stack, and for many candidates it can be the backbone of preparation, but "on its own" leaves the same gap every course does: it cannot cleanly measure transfer, because re-reading notes and re-doing recalled mock items rehearses memory. Paired with fresh, unseen questions and the free official samples, SPMM is a strong option; used as both the teacher and the sole yardstick, it is not enough.
Which MRCPsych Paper A component does SPMM not reproduce well? SPMM reproduces teaching and exam-realistic mocks well; what it reproduces less well is unseen, first-attempt performance, because its most exam-like material — reconstructed mock papers — is finite and works best used once, timed and spaced. Lean on SPMM for concepts and calibration, and get your ongoing transfer signal from questions you have never seen, so a good mock score reflects reasoning rather than recall of that particular paper.
How many SPMM questions should I complete per day for MRCPsych Paper A? Anchor volume to review quality rather than a target: roughly 20 to 40 HiYield or fresh questions a day with full error-coded review for a trainee working clinically, plus bounded study segments rather than open-ended note-reading. Reserve the Booster mock papers for full, timed sittings in the final weeks rather than drip-feeding them. Count questions interrogated and recalls written, not hours of video watched.
When should I stop using SPMM and move to mixed mocks? Shift to mixed, timed mocks once every domain has been taught and your unseen accuracy has stopped rising — typically the last two to three weeks — even if SmartRevise is not fully read. Use the SPMM Booster papers as part of that timed rehearsal, then review misses against the notes. Stop passive study before you feel finished; the exam rewards retrieval under time, not completion of a course.
How should I combine SPMM with iatroX without duplicating practice? Give each a single job: SPMM to teach and to provide realistic timed mocks, iatroX for unseen, mixed, timed blocks that measure transfer, with a protected iatroX pool you never pre-read. The duplication risk with a notes-heavy course is re-studying what you have already learned instead of testing it, so let SPMM teach once and iatroX grade on fresh items.
