How to Check Whether Your GPhC Question Bank Is Current: Framework Mapping, Medicine Sources and Conflicting Answers

Featured image for How to Check Whether Your GPhC Question Bank Is Current: Framework Mapping, Medicine Sources and Conflicting Answers

A current GPhC question bank should do more than display the present year. It should help you practise the applicable assessment framework, provide relevant explanations and make questionable answers possible to investigate. Start with the official framework for your sitting, then inspect how the bank connects its questions to the knowledge and decisions being assessed.

This article is published by iatroX and includes its own pharmacy learning tools among the resources subject to the same checks. Public product information was reviewed on 24 September 2026. The audit method below is a practical proposal, not a certification of any provider's complete question library.

Start with the assessment framework

The General Pharmaceutical Council's Common Registration Assessment guidance and its information for candidates sitting the assessment are the appropriate starting points for the applicable year, format and expectations. A provider's topic list should be mapped to those requirements rather than treated as the authority itself.

The practical question is whether a learning objective produces a suitable practice activity. A topic heading may be covered by a factual recognition question, an applied scenario or a calculation. Those activities are not interchangeable simply because they share a medicine or condition name.

For a fictional trainee, Nisha, a dashboard shows extensive completion of a clinical topic, but the questions she has attempted rarely ask her to resolve a practical discrepancy. Her audit should identify that task gap rather than assume that the topic is complete.

Use the relevant year's official framework. Do not carry forward an old weighting, equipment arrangement or response format merely because a previous candidate remembers it.

What a useful reference should show

A useful reference identifies the source clearly enough for the learner to inspect the actual claim. Relevant details include the publication or update date, version, jurisdiction, population and the part of the source that supports the explanation.

A citation can be genuine but insufficient. It may concern a different group, describe an exception that the explanation ignores or support only one part of a broader statement. A link to a large homepage is less useful than a precise source for the disputed point.

For medicine information, the appropriate source depends on the question. A product-specific SmPC, national guidance, a specialist medicines resource and an assessment framework answer different questions. Do not assume that one source automatically settles every disagreement without examining scope.

As reviewed on 24 September 2026, ONtrack presents its resource in relation to the current assessment framework and describes expert involvement. That is relevant published information, but it does not remove the need to inspect a disputed item. The same standard applies to PassMedicine, course-provider material and iatroX.

Why apparently conflicting answers arise

The first explanation to investigate is a difference in the question, not necessarily an error. Two stems may differ in the setting, timing, formulation, relevant history or information already available. A summary that removes those details can make two appropriate answers appear contradictory.

The second possibility is a difference in source scope. A recommendation for a defined population should not be generalised to all patients. A product-specific statement may not establish the same position for every formulation. A general educational principle may not answer a question about an exact operational requirement.

The third possibility is a change over time. An older question may cite a source that has since been updated. The relevant task is to identify the changed recommendation and whether it alters the answer, not simply to prefer the document with the newest date.

Finally, a question or explanation can be wrong. A mature learning process needs a way to report that possibility and preserve the correction. The existence of an error-reporting route is useful; its presence alone is not proof that corrections are always accurate or prompt.

A discrepancy log that remains usable

The following template is an original study tool. It avoids copying an entire proprietary question into another system.

FieldWhat to recordExample of an appropriate entry
Item referenceProvider and permitted question identifierThe reference visible in your own account
Disputed claimA brief description in your own wordsWhether the explanation distinguishes two formulations
Case contextOnly details necessary to explain the disagreementThe setting and relevant information supplied
SourceExact authoritative or relevant referenceTitle, section and accessible link
Date or versionThe source's stated update informationThe version shown on the source, not an invented date
Nature of disagreementScope, timing, interpretation or possible errorThe cited paragraph concerns a different population
ResolutionWhat the provider or source establishesCorrected, explained, unresolved or superseded
Follow-upThe learning activity that addresses the issueA new original scenario testing the distinction

Keep unresolved and corrected items separate. A question under investigation should not become a settled fact in your revision notes merely because one response sounded persuasive.

A worked discrepancy without a clinical dose

Imagine that Nisha sees feedback suggesting that two formulations can be treated as interchangeable in a practice scenario. She remembers a reference that appears to distinguish them. Rather than asking an AI to choose a winner, she first identifies the exact assumption in the explanation.

She then checks whether the source refers to the same product, formulation, route and population. If the source differs, the apparent conflict may be a comparison of unlike circumstances. If the scope matches, she records the specific passage and reports the discrepancy through the provider's permitted channel.

The educational gain is understanding why the distinction matters. The outcome is not a general rule that all formulations differ in the same way, nor a prescribing instruction for a real patient. No actual medicine or numerical dose is required to practise this verification process.

If the information remains unclear, she should seek an appropriate pharmacist educator or medicines-information source rather than let a chatbot's confidence close the issue.

How to report a questionable item

A useful correction request is concise and reproducible. For example: "In item [reference], I understood the explanation to mean [brief paraphrase]. The source linked below appears to address [specific distinction] in [relevant context]. Could you clarify whether the difference is intentional, or whether the explanation needs updating?"

Include the source date and relevant section, but avoid sending unnecessary personal information or reproducing a complete protected question outside the provider's reporting route. Explain the possible effect on the answer rather than asserting that the whole platform is unreliable.

When the provider replies, distinguish clarification from correction. A clarification may show that you missed an important qualifier. A correction may require changing your notes and revisiting similar items. An unresolved response should remain labelled as unresolved.

This process is more useful than collecting screenshots of conflicting answers without recording what ultimately settled the disagreement.

A weekly source-quality check

Choose a small sample of difficult, surprising or disputed explanations. Include some that you answered correctly, because agreement with the answer does not establish that the reasoning is sound. The goal is a sustainable quality check, not a complete re-audit of every question.

For each sample, inspect framework relevance, source precision and the connection between the source and the actual explanation. Then decide whether the issue changes your study plan. A one-off wording problem may need a correction request; repeated unsupported explanations in the same area may justify supplementary teaching or a different resource.

Do not infer the quality of the entire bank from a handful of samples. Sampling can identify concerns and help a purchasing decision, but a formal content-validation claim would require a defined method, representative coverage and appropriate review.

Apply the same standard to iatroX

Per iatroX product information, September 2026, Ask-iatroX is a free reference grounded in NICE, CKS, SIGN and SmPC information from emc, with linked sources and a published methodology covering retrieval, ranking, citation grounding, output checking and uncertainty handling. Those are design features, not a guarantee of correctness. Ask-iatroX should be checked against the same source-quality questions.

Its pharmacy examination practice and Socratic Tutor can support reasoning about a learning gap, but a generated explanation should not overrule official assessment instructions or a relevant authoritative source. A source citation also does not establish permission to reproduce proprietary content. This article does not claim that iatroX reproduces or licenses every resource a pharmacy learner may consult.

Ask-iatroX and free question access remain free without a trial expiry or verification gate. Use them to clarify a carefully framed question, not to outsource responsibility for investigating an unresolved discrepancy.

Choose according to the pattern, not a single disagreement

Keep a bank when its content, correction process and learning workflow remain useful and isolated problems can be resolved. Supplement it when a particular task or source-sensitive topic needs more depth. Consider changing when repeated, well-documented issues obstruct your learning and the provider cannot explain or correct them adequately.

Apply those scenarios equally to ONtrack, PassMedicine, course resources and iatroX. "Fully updated" is a claim to investigate, not a substitute for an inspectable explanation.

Frequently asked questions

Does a current year in the title prove a GPhC bank is up to date?

No. Check the applicable framework, the practice tasks and the dates and scope of supporting sources.

What should I do when two banks give different answers?

Compare the exact context and sources before assuming an error. Record the disagreement and use the provider's correction route when the difference remains unresolved.

Can an AI tutor decide which source is correct?

It can help articulate the disagreement and locate relevant considerations, but its answer is not an official assessment ruling. Verify the reasoning against appropriate sources and seek expert clarification where necessary.
