The exam anchor

The EECC is 120 five-option single-best-answer questions, no negative marking, three hours, no break, online-proctored through ProctorU. It runs annually in June (the 2026 diet was 16 June 2026), in English, and is aligned to the ESC Core Curriculum for the Cardiologist (2020). Because it is a written knowledge exam with no OSCE or viva, this workflow is about knowledge, images and reasoning under time. Remember that the ESC does not publish a per-domain percentage weighting, so your audit measures coverage against the Core Curriculum chapters, not against a public weighting.

Step 1: inventory the official material and label each item

List everything official you can reach, and honestly label each item's state. This label decides whether the item can still be used to measure you.

  • Unseen: you have never worked it. This is your gold for the audit.
  • Attempted once: you have done it under timed conditions once. It has told you what it can.
  • Contaminated by review: you have re-read or re-drilled it, so it now tests recognition, not reasoning. It is study material, not measurement.

Most candidates discover that a large share of their official material is already contaminated. Whatever is still unseen is precious, so plan its use before you touch it.

Step 2: choose the calibration date

Pick a date late enough that the sitting is meaningful but early enough to act on what it shows. For most candidates that is four to six weeks before the exam. Too early and your weak domains will not yet exist in stable form; too late and you cannot correct what the audit reveals. Put the date in your diary and protect it, because an audit you keep postponing is an audit you never do.

Step 3: reproduce exam conditions exactly

The audit is only valid if the conditions match the exam. Sit your unseen official items to time, at roughly 90 seconds per item. Use only the references the exam allows, which is none. Take no breaks beyond what the real paper permits. Answer in the real response format, five options and a single best answer, and, crucially, answer every item, because there is no negative marking and a blank is a wasted diagnostic signal as well as a wasted mark. Silence your phone and clear your desk; a relaxed, interrupted sitting produces a flattering, useless result.

Step 4: code every error, not merely the subject

After the sitting, do not simply note "got the arrhythmia one wrong". Code each error on three axes, because the axis tells you what to fix:

  • Domain: which Core Curriculum chapter.
  • Cognitive process: was it a knowledge gap, a misread stem, a reasoning slip, or a pacing error where you rushed?
  • Format: was it an image item, a calculation, a guideline-recency item, or straight recall?

A cluster of image-item errors across several domains is a very different problem from a knowledge gap in one chapter, and only three-axis coding makes that visible. Two candidates with the same score can need completely different weeks of work.

Step 5: map each error to fresh third-party practice

Now convert the audit into a plan, keeping the official questions out of daily repetition. Each coded error points to a specific kind of fresh, unseen practice. A knowledge gap in a chapter becomes a run of unseen questions in that chapter. A cluster of image errors becomes dedicated ECG or imaging blocks. A pacing error becomes timed mixed blocks at 90 seconds per item. Step 6: repeat only with genuinely unseen material

Run the audit again only when you have genuinely unseen official material, such as a newly released sample, or you will simply be testing your memory of last time. Worked example: one week after the audit

  • Switch your primary bank if its style diverges from the official items and extra image or reasoning practice does not close the gap.
  • Stop doing new questions when audits are stable, misses are single-domain and retention holds; then consolidate rather than churn.

Three mistakes this workflow prevents

Grinding the official items for marks. The scarce official questions are a ruler, not a gym. Drilling them into recognition leaves you with nothing clean to measure against in the final fortnight, which is when an honest signal matters most.

Coding errors by subject alone. "Got the valve one wrong" hides whether the failure was a knowledge gap, a misread stem, a reasoning slip or simple rushing. Only three-axis coding turns an error into an instruction you can act on, and it often reveals that a scatter of wrong answers is really one problem, such as pace, wearing several disguises.

Auditing too late or too relaxed. An audit sat two days before the exam, or sat untimed with the phone within reach, produces a flattering number you cannot use. Sit it early enough to correct what it shows, and under real conditions, or it is not an audit at all.

Sit it once under exam conditions, code every error on domain, cognitive process and format, and let those codes drive daily unseen practice on a bank while the official items stay parked.
