Free and Low-Cost Apps for Neurodivergent Medical Students and Clinicians

A low-cost study toolkit should begin with tools you already have and a clear account of what is genuinely free. A trial that expires, a free plan with limits and an institutional licence are different arrangements. The cheapest useful setup is not necessarily the one with the most free accounts; it is the one that performs the required jobs without duplication.

This comparison is published by iatroX and includes iatroX among the options. External plan information was checked on 3 October 2026; the iatroX UK prices below are from its September 2026 platform information. Currencies are kept as advertised and are not converted.

Audit access before buying a subscription

Check your device, university or employer's existing provision. A supported reading tool within an existing licence may have no additional personal charge, even though the underlying software is not universally free. The same distinction applies to institutionally supplied note-taking or accessibility software.

Separate access from permission. Being able to open an app through an institutional account does not establish that you may upload any clinical or educational material to it. Check the approved use and the kind of information involved.

Then identify the missing job. It may be a personal task list, a reading format, a way to start or a clinical learning resource. Avoid purchasing a bundle to solve a problem that an existing tool already addresses adequately.

A dated cost and access table

The following table reflects checks on 3 October 2026, with iatroX prices attributed to its September 2026 UK offer. It is not a currency-converted price ranking.

OptionPublished access or priceImportant boundary
Goblin Tools core web toolsFreePaid mobile apps and optional Pro features are separate
Anki desktopFreeDo not infer identical pricing for every mobile product
Focusmate FreeThree sessions per weekThis is a recurring limited plan, not unlimited sessions
Focusmate Plus$8 per month billed annually, or $12 monthlyPrices remain in US dollars; applicable taxes may be added
Microsoft Immersive Reader in a supported existing Word licencePotentially £0 additional personal costDepends on access already held, not a claim that every Word licence is free
Ask-iatroX and free question accessFree, without trial expiry or verification gateFull paid learning access is distinct
iatroX all-access annual£99 paid upfront for a yearEquivalent to £8.25 a month billed annually, not monthly instalments
iatroX all-access monthly£29 per monthA different billing commitment from the annual plan

The external entries are supported by the official Goblin Tools About page, Anki site, Focusmate pricing and Microsoft reading-tool documentation. A feature's presence on a product page does not mean it belongs to every free tier.

Understand the iatroX free and paid boundary

According to the September 2026 platform information, Ask-iatroX is a genuinely free clinical reference, and free question access is genuinely free. Neither is an expiring trial or dependent on a verification gate. That does not mean every examination bank or ongoing Tutor conversation is free.

The paid subscription covers question banks, Socratic Tutor, study planner, iatroX Simulations and CPD tools together. Simulations and CPD are included, not separately priced add-ons. The useful question is which of those methods supports your current learning or professional goal.

Do not value the bundle by counting unrelated examinations you will never prepare for. Someone studying for one assessment may still use questions, guided reasoning and simulations for that same goal; that is a more relevant comparison than the theoretical size of the catalogue.

Three fictional budgets, with the exclusions visible

Budget A is a zero-additional-subscription arrangement. A fictional student uses an existing calendar and notebook, free desktop Anki where suitable, free core web task support and free clinical-reference or question access. The additional subscription cost is £0. This excludes the device, internet access and any institutional provision already in place, and it does not include full paid learning access.

Budget B is a focused monthly learning arrangement. A fictional candidate keeps the same free organisational tools and adds one month of iatroX all-access at the September 2026 UK price of £29. The additional subscription total for that month is £29. It may suit a bounded period of use, but it should not be described as cheaper over every possible study period.

Budget C is an annual learning arrangement. A fictional clinician uses the same existing organisation tools and pays £99 upfront for a year of iatroX all-access. The monthly equivalent is £8.25, but the amount paid at the outset is £99. This is not a budget with an £8.25 monthly payment.

These are illustrative combinations, not claims that all readers need iatroX or that the free tools provide identical functionality to paid alternatives.

Calculate the break-even point correctly

At the September 2026 UK prices, three monthly iatroX payments total £87 and four total £116. The £99 annual option is therefore cheaper from the fourth month of otherwise paying £29 monthly. This arithmetic does not establish which plan fits someone's cash flow or expected duration of use.

Choose the commitment based on a realistic plan rather than the attractiveness of a monthly equivalent. Someone expecting only a short period of paid access should not be told that annual billing is automatically the more economical choice.

Keep a separate record of subscriptions in other currencies. The Focusmate dollar prices in the table are not directly ranked against iatroX's pound prices, and the products address different tasks in any case.

Include the cost of maintaining the system

Free software can still require substantial content creation, filing and review. A paid tool can be poor value when its features duplicate something you already use or when setup becomes another project.

Before upgrading, name the activity the payment will replace or make possible. Examples include a guided discussion tied to a question, additional coworking sessions or an accessible reading function needed for a particular document. "More features" is not a sufficiently specific reason.

For the lowest additional cost, begin with existing provision and genuinely free access. For a short, relevant learning period, consider a monthly subscription only where the paid functions have a clear role. For sustained use, compare the actual annual payment with the expected monthly total. The appropriate verdict depends on the reader's task and duration, not a universal cheapest-tool claim.

Frequently asked questions

Is free question access the same as every iatroX bank being free?

No: free access and the paid learning bundle have different boundaries. The September 2026 offer does not make every full examination bank or ongoing Tutor session free.

Is the annual iatroX plan paid at £8.25 each month?

No: the September 2026 UK annual price is £99 paid upfront. £8.25 is the monthly equivalent under annual billing.

Does a free plan prove that an app is suitable for patient information?

No: price and clinical information governance are separate questions. Use only the systems and arrangements approved for the relevant data and task.
