The European Exam in Core Cardiology (EECC) is a single written knowledge paper, and the ESC's own material is the closest thing you have to the real blueprint. This article is for cardiology trainees who already own a commercial EECC bank and want to use ESC Education Resources to calibrate: to read the format signals in the official items rather than grind them for marks. The principal limitation is that the official set is finite and partly access-restricted, so it calibrates your practice; it cannot supply it.

The exam the official material is calibrated to
The EECC is 120 multiple-choice questions, each with five options and a single best answer, with no negative marking. You get three hours and no break. It is online-proctored through ProctorU on your own computer and can be sat from anywhere. It runs once a year in June; the 2026 diet was 16 June 2026. Questions are in English, and the paper is aligned to the ESC Core Curriculum for the Cardiologist (2020), which is built around nine chapters and an Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA) and CanMEDS competency frame.
One honest point that changes how you should use every resource: the ESC does not publish a fixed per-domain percentage weighting for the paper. So "the blueprint" for coverage purposes is the Core Curriculum's chapters, not a public percentage table. If a commercial product implies it has reverse-engineered the exact weighting, treat that as marketing, not fact.
What is genuinely official, and what is not
It is worth being precise, because candidates routinely treat a third-party bank as if it were the exam. Genuinely official material is the ESC Core Curriculum document (the blueprint), the ESC 365 structure presentations and example questions, and the ESC's registered-candidate preparatory course. Everything else, including StudyPRN's EECC bank, the Oxford University Press MCQ book for the EECC, and various online courses, is legitimate third-party preparation authored to someone's interpretation of the curriculum. Those products can be very good, but they are not the exam.
The single most useful official artefact is the Core Curriculum itself, because it is the only document that tells you what "covered" is supposed to mean. The example items tell you what "covered" looks like when it is examined.
Extract the signals, do not grind the items
The purpose of official material is not marks. It is format intelligence. When you look at the official example items, read them for eight signals and write each one down:
- Stem length and structure: a single clinical vignette, or one-line factual recall? EECC stems tend to be scenario-based.
- Option construction: five plausible options with one best answer, not one right answer and four absurd distractors.
- Cognitive level: recognition of a fact, or selection of the next best step in reasoning?
- Image use: do the official items lean on ECGs, echo stills, angiograms or CMR? Cardiology is an image-heavy specialty and the paper reflects that.
- Timing: 120 questions in 180 minutes is roughly 90 seconds per item, so pace is a genuine constraint, not a background detail.
- Negative marking: there is none, so a blank is a wasted mark. Never leave one.
- Domain emphasis: which Core Curriculum chapters do the examples cluster around?
- Language and register: European guideline terminology and units, not US board phrasing.
Those eight signals become your practice conditions. They are worth more than the marks you would score by drilling the same handful of official items into recognition.

Use the discrepancies diagnostically
Once the matrix is filled, the differences are the point. If your bank is harder than the official items, that is useful stress, but watch for demoralisation and do not let it distort your sense of the real standard. If it is easier or more factual, you will be under-prepared for next-best-step reasoning. If it is narrower, you have a coverage gap to fill from the Core Curriculum chapters it under-weights, which for many banks means adult congenital disease, cardio-oncology, pregnancy and cardiovascular disease, and critical-care cardiology. If it is differently worded, you may be pattern-matching to a house style rather than learning the medicine. Decide which of these is true for your bank and act on it, rather than assuming your percentage on the bank is your readiness.
Preserve the calibration value
Sit the official material unseen, timed, and once. The moment you re-drill official items, you are measuring recognition rather than reasoning, and you have spent your only true yardstick. Ring-fence the official example items and any released sample paper, do a single timed pass, and then park them. This discipline is exactly what most candidates get wrong: they treat the scarce official items as practice fodder and then have nothing clean left to calibrate against in the final fortnight.
Translate the signals into quotas and conditions
Turn the read-out into numbers you can act on. Set a daily unseen quota on your commercial bank rather than on the official set. Keep every block five-option single-best-answer. Once you are four weeks out, time everything at roughly 90 seconds per item. Include an image-inclusive block at least twice a week because the paper is image-heavy. And once you are past the initial learning phase, work in mixed-domain blocks rather than single-topic sets, because the exam does not announce the topic before each question.
Worked example: one week for a busy trainee

- Day 1 (calibrate): 60 to 90 minutes. Read the official example items and the structure presentation, write down the eight signals, and do not grind. This is a reading exercise, not a scored one.

- Day 6 (consolidate): spaced retrieval of the week's misses, not new content.
- Day 7 (audit): a 40-item mixed timed block. Compare first-attempt accuracy against your Day 2 baseline, then rest or teach a colleague.
Decision checklist: continue, supplement, switch or stop
- Continue with your current bank if unseen first-attempt accuracy is climbing and your coverage spans every Core Curriculum chapter.
- Supplement with iatroX or a second bank, following the two-Q-bank rule, if coverage is narrow or your accuracy plateaus on unseen items.
- Switch if the bank's stems do not match the official vignette style and you cannot fix that by adding image and reasoning practice.
- Stop doing new questions only when unseen, timed, mixed blocks are stable at your target and your misses are single-domain. Then consolidate; do not churn for the sake of it.
Bottom line
ESC Education Resources is the ruler, not the gym. Use the official curriculum and example items to read the format and to define what coverage means, keep them unseen and timed, and take your volume from a commercial bank plus an unseen-measurement layer. The candidates who miss the blueprint signals are almost always the ones grinding scarce official items for marks and never once calibrating their bank against them.

Is ESC Education Resources enough for EECC on its own? For most candidates, no. The official material is finite, partly restricted to registered candidates for a short window, and calibration-grade rather than high-volume. It defines the standard and shows you the format superbly, but it cannot give you the hundreds of unseen, mixed, timed repetitions you need to build pace and breadth. Use it as your ruler and get your volume elsewhere.
Which EECC component does ESC Education Resources not reproduce well? The EECC is a single written paper with no OSCE and no viva, so the honest gap is not a missing "component" but missing volume and unseen reasoning under time. The official set is too small and too static to train your pace, and once you have seen an item you can no longer use it to measure yourself.
How many ESC Education Resources questions should I complete per day for EECC? Very few, and ideally only once. The official pool is small and precious, so spend it as a single timed calibration pass rather than a daily drill. Your daily volume, in the region of 30 to 60 unseen items, belongs on a commercial bank so that the official material stays clean.
When should I stop using ESC Education Resources and move to mixed mocks? After one timed, unseen pass to extract the format signals. At that point you have taken everything calibration can give you, and continuing to reuse the same official items only trains recognition. Move to mixed unseen mocks and return to official material only when a genuinely new sample is released.
How should I combine ESC Education Resources with iatroX without duplicating practice? Give each a single job. ESC material is calibration and blueprint; iatroX is unseen volume plus spaced retrieval on the chapters you miss.
