ESAP can be useful for Endocrinology and Diabetes SCE revision when it addresses a genuine knowledge gap, but it is not the same assessment. The productive approach is to use its explanations, identify the assumptions behind an answer and test the concept in the context required by the SCE. Do not treat shared subject matter as complete examination equivalence.
There is a specific trap to avoid: assuming that a US educational product necessarily presents every laboratory result in unfamiliar units. The current ESAP description explicitly includes SI units for international practitioners.
What the current ESAP product provides
The ESAP 2026 product page, checked on 19 September 2026, describes 120 new multiple-choice questions with discussion of answer options and references. It offers a learning mode with immediate feedback and a mock mode with feedback after completion, including topic selection. Its CME and MOC conditions belong to that programme.
Those features mean the relevant comparison is not 'teaching versus questions' or 'American units versus SI units'. It is whether the particular questions and explanations help with your current endocrine learning problem. Product descriptions do not establish performance on the SCE or an equivalence between the two assessments.
This article is published by iatroX and includes its SCE-specific question route as a possible supplement. Neither provider has been assigned an invented accuracy score or pass-rate advantage.
Start with what the result actually measures
Endocrinology revision can become a collection of arrows: a hormone goes up, another goes down, therefore a diagnosis follows. That shorthand is useful only when the learner remembers the conditions that make the relationship interpretable.
Before naming a disorder, record the analyte, whether the measurement is total or free where relevant, the reporting range, the sampling context and the clinical question. Then explain the relationship between the results. A correctly remembered pattern can still be misapplied to a different measurement.
The American Thyroid Association's thyroid-function explanation, checked on 19 September 2026, distinguishes total and free hormone measurements and discusses circumstances that affect test interpretation. It also identifies potential assay interference from biotin. The educational point is to inspect the measurement and context, not to apply an unsupervised intervention to an individual patient's result.
A worked comparison of two fictional reports
Report A describes a patient with a total hormone measurement outside its reference range. Report B describes a different patient with a free hormone measurement and the relevant regulatory hormone. A learner compares the two numbers as though they represent the same quantity.
The first correction is not a conversion formula. It is to recognise that the reports do not describe identical measurements. Write what each test contributes before discussing the clinical interpretation. Then identify the additional information required to relate the result to the patient's situation.
For a second version, the laboratory report includes a warning about possible analytical interference. The candidate notices the abnormal number but omits the warning when summarising the case. Ask which statement is most defensible: that the diagnosis is confirmed, that every abnormal result must be ignored, or that the result needs interpretation in light of the stated limitation.
The third answer respects the information given. It does not settle the final diagnosis. This original exercise tests the boundary between an observed result, an inference and a claim of certainty; it is not a reproduced ESAP item.
Do not turn localisation into a reflex
When reviewing an ESAP explanation, separate three questions. Is the physiological principle relevant? Does the clinical recommendation concern the same population? Are the investigation, medicine or service assumptions appropriate for the target context?
A difference in terminology may require only a note. A different indication or patient group requires more substantive checking. A current US recommendation should not automatically be labelled wrong because it differs from a UK resource, nor should a UK candidate silently substitute it for the guidance relevant to the SCE.
Record the exact disagreement. For example: 'The two sources discuss different stages of investigation' is a resolution. 'Guidelines vary' is not. If you cannot establish why the answers differ, preserve the uncertainty and seek appropriate clarification.
Keep the source and date with any recommendation likely to change. Do not let a memorable explanation become an undated rule in a flashcard deck.
Use learning mode and mock mode for different questions
An immediate explanation is useful when you are rebuilding understanding. It lets you identify the point where your reasoning diverged and correct it before attempting a related problem. That is not the same as measuring unaided performance across a mixed set.
A mock session asks a different question: can you select an answer without the explanation interrupting the task? Review it afterwards for the type of error, not just the percentage. Repeated exposure to the same questions changes what the score represents.
For the fictional report exercise, a learning session might end with a short explanation of total versus free measurement. A later session should use a different problem in which measurement context matters. Do not simply hide the previous answer and call the second attempt an independent test.
The mode you choose should follow the learning purpose, not a belief that one mode is universally more rigorous.
Build a narrow SCE follow-through
After a useful ESAP session, write one question you should now be able to answer and one condition that would change your answer. Keep the note short enough to use in the next revision session.
The September 2026 iatroX product brief lists an Endocrinology and Diabetes SCE bank, with adaptive and spaced practice and paid question-specific Socratic tutoring. The exam selector keeps that pathway distinct from other examinations. A proposed Tutor exchange could ask why the candidate ignored the laboratory warning, rather than merely repeat the selected answer.
There is no need to upload another provider's proprietary explanation. State your uncertainty in your own words and use legitimately available questions. Likewise, do not claim ESAP's CME or MOC for activity performed in a separate product.
For a clinician seeking broad endocrine continuing education, ESAP's own programme may be the relevant purchase. For a candidate whose immediate need is SCE-specific application, a targeted sample may be more useful. For someone with access to both, assign one a teaching role and the other an independent-practice role only where the content genuinely complements rather than duplicates.
Frequently asked questions
Does ESAP 2026 include SI units?
Yes; the product page checked on 19 September 2026 explicitly states that SI units are included for international practitioners. That does not remove the need to inspect the measurement and reference context.
Does passing an ESAP learning assessment predict an SCE pass?
No such prediction is established by the public product description. Programme completion, repeated-question performance and an independent examination result are different measures.
What should I do when an ESAP explanation differs from a UK revision source?
Compare the population, question, measurement context and source date before concluding that either is wrong. Record any unresolved difference rather than memorising whichever answer sounds more confident.
