DTM&H for International Doctors: Eligibility, Courses, and Career Benefits

The DTM&H is a globally recognised qualification — not just a UK exam. Doctors from over 100 countries have sat and passed it. For international doctors planning careers in tropical medicine, global health, humanitarian work, or tropical clinical practice, the DTM&H demonstrates competence in a field that many medical curricula cover inadequately.

Eligibility

To sit the DTM&H examination, you must hold a medical qualification from a recognised institution (your degree must be listed in the WHO World Directory of Medical Schools) and have possessed that qualification for at least one year, and you must have completed an approved DTM&H preparatory course with a minimum of 12 hours microscopy/practical parasitology teaching.

You do not need GMC registration to sit the exam. You do not need to be practising in the UK. The exam is delivered online — you can sit it from anywhere in the world with a stable internet connection.

Course Access for International Doctors

Glasgow DTM&H (online, part-time): The most accessible course for international doctors. Core content delivered online. Laboratory sessions available at multiple international partner institutions: Malawi, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Africa, India, and the Netherlands, in addition to Glasgow. Competitive scholarships available.

LSHTM and LSTM (full-time, UK-based): Require 3 months in the UK. May require a UK visa. Higher cost including London/Liverpool living expenses. But the clinical exposure and laboratory training are unparalleled.

MSF GHHM (South Asia course): Available for doctors in South and Southeast Asia. Combines tropical medicine with humanitarian medicine.

Nagasaki University DTM&H: Approved by both ASTMH and the Apothecaries. Available for international applicants. Taught in English.

Career Benefits

For doctors working in endemic countries: The DTM&H validates your tropical medicine knowledge at an internationally recognised standard. It demonstrates competence to employers, NGOs, and health ministries.

For doctors planning humanitarian careers: The DTM&H (particularly through the MSF GHHM route) is valued by humanitarian organisations for deployment to tropical and resource-limited settings.

For doctors seeking UK practice: The DTM&H is a desirable qualification for infectious disease, tropical medicine, and public health positions in the UK. It is not a registration requirement but strengthens applications.

For academic careers: The DTM&H is often a prerequisite or strong advantage for tropical medicine research positions and further postgraduate study (MSc, PhD) in global health.

Preparation for International Doctors

The exam tests UK-influenced tropical medicine practice — reflecting the syllabus of UK-based courses. International doctors should be aware that some management recommendations may differ from local practice in their home country. The exam expects answers aligned with WHO guidelines and the UK DTM&H syllabus.

The iatroX DTM&H Q-Bank with 600+ curriculum-mapped questions provides the preparation layer that aligns your knowledge with the exam's expectations. Ask iatroX provides instant clinical reference for tropical medicine management pathways. A single subscription at iatroX Boards includes access to the DTM&H Q-Bank alongside other specialty Q-banks — efficient if you hold or are pursuing multiple qualifications.

The DTM&H is achievable from anywhere in the world. The online exam format, the accessible Glasgow course, and the international laboratory partnerships have removed most of the geographic barriers. What remains is the preparation — and iatroX provides that, free from any location.
