This workflow is for candidates using the DIMC Prep question bank to prepare for the DipIMC Part A written paper. Exam anchor: the standard DIMC Prep is aiming at
DipIMC is awarded by the RCSEd Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care and has two components, both of which must be passed:
- Part A (written): 180 SBA questions in 180 minutes.
- Part B (OSPE): 14 stations — twelve 8-minute and two 16-minute — plus rest/preparation stations.
Part A is blueprinted to the UK PHEM curriculum and sits around Skills for Health Level 6; the college-reported standard fee is £760, with single-component resits available and up to five attempts allowed. A written bank such as DIMC Prep maps cleanly onto Part A. It cannot rehearse the practical stations, so plan hands-on OSPE preparation separately and read the current RCSEd regulations for the definitive format.
Create a blueprint inventory and protect an unseen pool
Before your first block, split the bank in your own records into a working pool and a protected pool. The protected pool — perhaps a fifth to a quarter of the bank, plus at least one untouched mock — is never used for topic study. It exists only for timed, mixed, unseen assessment later, because the moment you have seen a question its predictive value collapses. Then build a simple blueprint inventory: list the PHEM domains (trauma by body region, medical and cardiac emergencies, airway and analgesia, paediatric, obstetric, environmental, toxicology, major incident/triage, medico-legal and equipment/transport) and mark where you already feel weak. That inventory, not the bank's default order, drives your first pass.
First pass: topic blocks only where foundations are weak
Topic-filtered blocks are a teaching tool, not a testing tool. Use them only where the inventory shows a genuine foundation gap — a domain where you cannot yet reason through a single case. Everywhere else, start mixed. Topic cueing (knowing the block is "obstetrics", so the answer is about obstetrics) inflates accuracy and hides exactly the discrimination the exam tests. A practical rule: no more than a third of your total questions should be topic-filtered, and that share should shrink each week.
Review each miss with an error code, not a transcript
For every wrong answer, and every lucky guess, assign one short error code and one corrective action. Do not copy out the explanation. A workable code set is: knowledge gap (never learnt it), discrimination (knew the topic, chose the wrong option), misread (missed a stem detail), pacing (rushed under time), recency (used out-of-date guidance). The corrective action is one line — "learn the pre-hospital pelvic binder indications", "slow down and read the last sentence of the stem" — and it becomes a to-do, not a paragraph you will never reread. Coding errors turns a review session into a plan.
Use transfer practice before repeating the original
The temptation after a miss is to re-answer the same question until it is green. That trains recognition of one item, not understanding of the principle. Instead, answer a different item testing the same principle — from another topic filter, or from iatroX — before you ever revisit the original. If you get the transfer question right, the learning generalised; if you get it wrong, you have proven the first "correction" was superficial. Only after a successful transfer is it worth re-attempting the original, and even then mainly to confirm.
Switch to mixed timed blocks when domain floors are met
Do not wait for 100% completion to start mixing. As soon as each domain clears a floor — say, first-attempt accuracy consistently above your target threshold on topic blocks — move that domain into timed, mixed blocks drawn partly from your protected pool. Mixed timed blocks are the closest DIMC Prep gets to Part A conditions: no topic label, a running clock at roughly a minute per item, and every domain in play. This is also where you should schedule your untouched mock, under full timing, to get a clean read.
Exit criteria: five signals, not a percentage
You are ready to stop doing new DIMC Prep questions when five things are true together, and completion percentage is not one of them:
- Coverage — every blueprint domain has been attempted, not just the comfortable ones.
- Unseen timed performance — accuracy on fresh, mixed, timed items from your protected pool is at or above your target, not just on reviewed questions.
- Pacing — you finish mixed blocks inside one minute per item without a late-paper collapse.
- Retention — spaced retests of earlier misses hold up a week later.
- Official-material calibration — your performance on the RCSEd sample material lines up with your bank scores, so you are not calibrated to the vendor's style alone.
A seven-day plan (worked example)
DIMC Prep does one defined job here — building and measuring Part A written knowledge — while iatroX supplies unseen transfer practice so you are not marking your own homework on questions you have already seen. Numbers are illustrative.

Decision checklist: continue, supplement, switch or stop
- Continue with DIMC Prep while you still have unseen items and your mixed, timed accuracy is trending up across domains.
- Supplement with a second, non-overlapping source (iatroX for unseen mixed measurement) once you notice your accuracy is high on reviewed questions but soft on fresh ones — that gap is recognition, not knowledge, and a second bank breaks it.
- Switch primary bank only for a measurable reason: persistent domain gaps the bank does not cover well, or explanations that are not moving your transfer accuracy — never novelty.
- Stop doing new questions when the five exit signals are met together; past that point, rehearse the OSPE and rest rather than grinding a higher completion percentage.
Frequently asked questions
Is DIMC Prep enough for DipIMC on its own? For the Part A written paper, DIMC Prep is a strong, purpose-built option, and many candidates could cover the written knowledge largely through it plus the official RCSEd material. It is not enough for the diploma as a whole, because it does not reproduce the Part B OSPE, which needs supervised, hands-on practical rehearsal. Even for Part A, pairing it with a second unseen source protects you against calibrating to one vendor's question style.
Which DipIMC component does DIMC Prep not reproduce well? The Part B OSPE. DIMC Prep is an SBA bank, so it trains written recognition and reasoning but cannot assess practical skills such as airway management, catastrophic haemorrhage control, immobilisation and structured handover under a station clock. Use it for Part A and rehearse the OSPE with hands-on teaching, mannequin practice and mock stations.
